Clean & Green Singapore Jigsaw Puzzle Challenge

Our team A (comprising Lim Jeck, Lim Min and myself) was the only team among 15 competing teams which completed the puzzle, and emerged the champion to win $210 NTUC Fairprice vouchers. Our team B came in 3rd, and won $120 NTUC Fairprice vouchers. Clarence Chew & family team won a consolation prize with $60 NTUC Fairprice vouchers.

3rd WengsWorld Jigsaw Puzzle Competition

We took part in the 3rd WengsWorld Jigsaw Puzzle Competition held at Tiong Bahru Community Centre yesterday, from 3.30 - 6 pm.

There were 18 teams taking part. Each team was given 2 hrs to complete a 500-pc jigsaw puzzle.

Saw Hean and Sor Khim in 1 team. Their puzzle was almost completed at the end of 2 hrs.

Lim Min and Lim Jeck emerged champion and won a puzzle each!

Results:
1st: Lim Jeck and Lim Min (1 hr 7 mins)
2nd: Dorothy and Roger (1 hr 39 mins)
3rd: Min Yu and Yang San (1 hr 41 mins)
4th: Stella and Yuwen (1 hr 50 mins)

Heye and Kitty puzzles

Heye 750-pc puzzle (Opera Bavaria) done in 1 day.

Down Town Kitty 1000-pc puzzle done in 2 days.

Another Puzzle done

2500-pc puzzle - took about 1 week to fix it.

It is a good quality MB brand puzzle, the interlocking is so secure that Lim Li can lift up the entire puzzle (without glue).

Impossible Puzzle

We bought the below impossibles puzzle from Borders Wheelock Place in July this year, before Borders was closed down. We only fixed it yesterday as we enjoy fixing puzzles after the exams or during the school holidays. As described on the box, the puzzle has no edge and has 5 extra pieces.

As you can see, instead of 5 extra pieces, we found 6 extra pieces and 1 piece is missing! This is literally an "impossible" puzzle.

Small (pieces) Puzzles

Holidays time = puzzle time again. My mother has just bought a new 1000-pc puzzle from Takashimaya. I took a few days (2-3 hours a day) to fix it. On the box it says 'world's smallest 1000-pc jigsaw puzzle'. The other postcard-size puzzle is an old 204-pc puzzle, which I have fixed many times already. You can see a actual size postcard below the box. I have placed one 5-cent coin and one 10-cent coin next to the single pieces, so that you can have a feel of the size of the pieces.

Special Round Puzzle

This is a 900-pc round puzzle, which I have completed over a few days (1-2 hrs per day). My mother said she fixed this puzzle with her two younger sisters when they were teenagers, like 30 years ago! Recently, she got it from my 7th aunt.

I think it is harder than the normal rectangular shape puzzle as it is difficult to look for the edge pieces (some inside pieces also have similar almost-straight edges), and there are no corner pieces.

I will be going for the SIMO camp, from 5 - 10 June, and will not be updating my blog till I come back from the camp.

Holidays = Jigsaw Puzzle Time!

I like to fix jigsaw puzzles. These are the puzzles that I have fixed so far since the holidays started.

The 'Mother & Child' and the Japan scenary puzzles are 1000-pc. They are good quality puzzles with interlocking pieces, but are quite difficult to fix as there are not many unique colours/patterns. I took a few days to fix them.


The above puzzles are also 1000-pc, but very easy to fix since they are cartoon types.

Sometimes when I find it boring fixing from the front, I will fix from behind (see puzzle on the left), then turn the pieces over. The completed puzzle is below.

After completing the puzzle, I would divide the puzzle into several equal portions, pile them up in a stack and then wrap them up in an unused paper (see the left picture). During the next holidays, I will unwrap the paper, dismantle the puzzle into individual pieces and then fix again.

I have more than 30 puzzles at home, and have fixed each of them many times. Anyone has new, challenging puzzles for me to fix???

SMO Prize Presentation and Jigsaw Puzzle Competition

There are 2 events today. In the morning, I went for the SMO prize presentation ceremony which was held at NUS High Auditorium. For SMO(Junior) Team category, NUS High won 2nd, tied with Hwa Chong. We were awarded with $500, however, we couldn't keep the money as it's for the school.

For the SMO(Junior) Individual category, Ang Yan Sheng got 3rd whereas I was 6th. We were awarded with $200 cheque and $100 cheque, respectively. Last year, I got 8th and the prize money was also $100, but in real cash.

After the SMO prize presentation, we had buffet lunch at the Concourse, before proceeding to the Civil Service Club for a jigsaw puzzle competition. It was a 1000-pc puzzle, which was extremely difficult - more than half of the picture was pink and 1/5 was all white (you can see the puzzle from the photo below). There were about 20+ teams competing. After 3 hrs, we did not manage to finish the puzzle, leaving 203 pieces uncompleted. Yet we came in Champion!! The 2nd team had 267 pieces undone, and the 3rd team 293 pieces not fixed. We won a $500 cash cheque. My mother's friend received $125 while the 3 of us kept the remaining $375. After deducting the registration fee of $23 each, each of us earned $102 each. So, today I earned $202 in total, haha!

World Largest Puzzle

Do you know what is the world largest puzzle? It is this 24000-pc jigsaw puzzle, called Life, the Great Challenge. It costs almost US$300, and its size is 4.28m x 1.57m. I wonder how long one takes to fix this puzzle, maybe 10 years! Even fixing the edges will probably take weeks. And where to keep the unfinished puzzle?

Mini Puzzle

My mother bought this 204-pc puzzle (costs $10) from the Jigsaw Puzzle World yesterday. It is in postcard size, with tiny pieces. The pieces are so small the set includes a miniature pair of tweezers for people with blunt fingers.

It is The Last Supper, by Leonardo da Vinci (Italian, 1452 – 1519) who was the most famous painter who ever lived, and was also a prolific inventor, scientist, and engineer. Leonardo began this painting in 1495 and completed it in 1498.

I finished fixing the puzzle within 1/2 hr. Anymore puzzles for me to fix? I hope my mother can buy a 2000-pc or 5000-pc puzzle for me to fix!

Holiday so far

The holidays are going away very quickly, and I haven't done my homework yet, since I have no homework. This is because ours is a modular system, we finished our modules last semester and will have new modules next semester. I actually did nothing during the holidays, besides sleeping, watching TV, playing on the computer, fixing jigsaw puzzles and playing badminton. Below is a puzzle that I have dismantled and assembled many times. I have a lot of other puzzles, which I would fix again and again, whenever I am free.


The only thing memorable is the BBQ (6A class gathering) which was held 3 days ago. My mother did not take any photos but she said Mrs Shahrin would send the photos to her, so I will upload the photos later.
