Nanyang Scholarship and University Application

Lim Min has been offered the foremost Nanyang Scholarship by NTU.

Nanyang Scholarship covers up to the normal programme duration on condition that the scholar maintains a record of good academic performance and conduct satisfactory to the University.
- Subsidised tuition fees (after Tuition Grant) will be fully covered
- Living allowance of S$6,000 per academic year.
- Book allowance of S$500 per academic year.
- Accommodation allowance of up to S$2,000 per academic year.
Applicable to scholars who reside in NTU hostels.
- Travel grant of S$5,000 (one-off) *
- Computer allowance of S$1,500 (one-off).
- Settling-in allowance of S$250 (one-off).
- Priority for Overseas Study Programme.
- No bond is attached to the Nanyang Scholarship apart from the three-year bond applicable to all Singapore PRs and international students under the MOE Tuition Grant Scheme.

Course Offered - Double Degree in Accountancy and Business (Direct Honours, duration 3.5 to 4 years)

Lim Min prefers a professional course (Accountancy) + a course that she has interest in or is confident of doing well (Computing/Math/Science). Unfortunately, NTU does not have such a double degree, so she ended up choosing NTU Accountancy + Business. Both Accountancy and Business are new to her, it is difficult to tell if she would be interested or if she will excel in these courses to earn a good honours degree at the end. She would be more confident of doing well in Math, Science and Computing modules, which has always been her pet subjects. By taking Accountancy and Business, it means she has to step out of her comfort zone into new challenges. The NTU offer is attractive - a good scholarship, with a double degree (in Accountancy and Business with direct honours) that takes only 3.5 to 4 years. Most other double degrees with honours from NTU and NUS would have required 4.5 - 5 years to complete. And according to the article above from NTU magazine Hey! Mar-Apr 2013 issue, the first batch of its double degree in Accountancy and Business who graduated last year are earning an average of $7k+ at the 90th percentile :O

*******
Results of application to NUS and SMU is pending. (SMU interview is scheduled for 26 March)

NUS - applied for Double Degree in Accountancy and Computing (with Honours, duration 4.5 to 5 years)
SMU - applied for Double Degree in Accountancy and Information System Management (with Cum Laude latin honours system, duration 4 to 4.5 years)

Eindhoven Newspaper (The Netherlands)

Photo: The Singapore students follow different lessons on the Lorentz Casimir Lyceum to learn more about the Dutch education system.

In Dutch. Translated to English:

East and West meet at Eindhoven

Four pair of eyes are focused on teacher Latin Fokko Ringeling. The almost empty packet of Hollandse stroopwafels is in the middle on the table. The pupils from the NUS High School of Mathematics and Science in Singapore, are in - equivalent to - year 5 and 6. Together with two teachers and the headmaster, they visit the Lorentz Casimir Lyceum. The purpose of the journey is the learning of the Dutch education system, in particular, teaching of Mathematics.

The answer to the question as to why the Singapore education produces high achievers, the headmaster does not know exactly. He believes that the Asian culture, and parents in Asia are very focused on the education and the performance of their children. As a result students were highly motivated. “The reason why our education is so good, is that we learn from other countries", said Dr. Hang.

Indeed, learning from each other is the crux of the visit. This applies not only to the chancellor but also for the pupils. The first and second grade students get a presentation of the Singaporean education system. Cooperation between both schools already exists before the visit. Dr. Hang’s school organizes the Singapore International Mathematics Challenge every two years. Last year the Netherlands was represented by four students from the Lorentz. During the competition, Dr. Hang was invited to come to the Netherlands.

Dr. Hang has yet another reason to be in the Netherlands. His students will be spending this weekend at the international finals of the mathematics Alympiade in the Gelderse Garderen. According to the headmaster, the goal is not to win.  "The pupils should enjoy the experience and meeting new people. I think that is much more important than winning," said the headmaster.

We teach the following subjects:
Pri 1-3: Math, English
Pri 4-6: Math, Science
Sec 1-4: Math, Chemistry, Physics, Biology
JC 1-2: Math, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Economics, History

Grades of tutors will be provided upon request, please be rest assured that we get As (or A* for PSLE) in the subjects which each of us are teaching, and that we are confident enough to teach them :) :) Most of us have prior teaching experience too (home tuition or relief teaching).

Bollywood movie - 3 Idiots

I have watched this Indian film recently on Youtube.

3 Idiots is easily one of the best Bollywood films that I have watched. One important theme in the movie is "follow your heart". In Singapore, it is common for parents to want their children to pursue a degree in Medicine or Law, hoping that they will become successful doctors or lawyers in the future (after watching the movie, I guess in India, the most prestigious job is Engineer). It is as if other degrees/jobs are considered inferior.

I would strongly urge all high school students and their parents to watch this movie. Parents - do let your children pursue their dreams! Passion leads to excellence!

What's in store for 2013 ...

Since December 2012, Lim Min has been giving 1-1 home tuition, and she has 14-15 students so far. She is charging $20 - $30 per hour, and makes a princely sum each month, from these tuition assignments. Lately, there are more and more new tuition requests, and she has been passing them to her friends. From Lim Min's experience, it shows tuition industry in Singapore is certainly a lucrative business. I can't imagine how much full time tutors who charge much more, and who are giving group tuition, could earn each month. It is perplexing why the students do not approach their peers, seniors and school teachers for help/consultancy (free!) and instead, look to tutors for help (and incurring much of their parents' hard earned $).

Lim Min would be giving relief teaching at RI (JC). There is a confirmed 10-day assignment for her, to teach Math, from 18 Feb to 1 Mar. She intends to read a double degree in NUS, possibly Accountancy and Computing, or Engineering, or Math (any two of these four disciplines), and has applied for an NUS scholarship. The NUS new term will start in August 2013.

This year in his Year 6 at NUS High, Lim Jeck is in both the IMO and APhO/IPhO national training team. Training for IMO is held every Sat morning at NUS Math Dept, whereas training for APhO/IPhO is held on Wed afternoons and Sat mornings. He has decided to call it a day, for the IOI training which is supposed to start this week. Since both IOI 2013 and IPhO 2013 dates clash, and clearly it is not advisable for one to pursue 3 olympiads, naturally one has to go. Though both IMO 2013 (18 to 28 July 2013, at Columbia) and IPhO 2013 (7 to 15 July, Denmark) dates do not clash, if he were to be selected for both olympiads, I think he should perhaps pick only one to go. This is because the intensive training for both olympiads fall in the same period, June to July. If I were him, and if I qualify for both IMO and IPhO, I would opt for the latter. I feel that he had already won 2 IMO Gold medals, and had achieved #1 in the World and perfect score (that is, there is no more room for improvement), it is timely to retire at his peak, from IMO. However, if he indeed qualifies for both national teams (selection tests will be held in April and May 2013), the choice would be for him to make. Let's see what's his choice, when the time comes. [if he has cleared both selection tests, it means he has earned his right to participate in both competitions, shouldn't he be allowed/supported to take part in both competitions? Must he make a choice?]

For Year 2 NUS High, Lim Li has to select 2 out of 3 Art/Humanities/Music modules. As she has no affinity for Art, she opted for Music and Geography. In NUS High, one has to take all the core Math, Physics, Chemistry and Biology modules for Year 1-4, and only 1 Art/Humanities/Music module in Year 3 & 4. I think she is likely to choose Economics or Geography then.
